Review of CONTEXT art fair
CONTEXT art fair, a sister fair of Art Miami 2013, commenced with a VIP opening/preview held as a benefit for the Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM). CONTEXT is known as the attraction for tens of thousands curators, artists, aficionados, designers and other participants for the benefit as well for the fair itself. Gallery listing has been extended to 190 participants by bringing together spaces of the fair and the hosting Art Miami, which resulted in 60,000 square meter floor coverage.
CONTEXT – Background
Over the years, CONTEXT has become an established event where eminent collectors can purchase new art from an array of renowned international galleries. Represented at the fair are mostly emerging and mid-career artists characterized by new ideas and unprecedented originality.
Fabien Castanier Gallery
Review of the show indicated that the urban art lovers must have seen the Fabien Castanier Gallery booth, as it was more than attention worthy. The selection of the artists presented included Speedy Graphito, JonOne, RERO and Mark Jenkins, where JonOne and Mark Jenkins exhibit at Miami Art Week for the first time, and were in fact, present at the event. Gallery’s program for this occasion included a combination of treats, as it encompassed historic artwork from one of the seminal eras of graffiti in the 80’s.
A part of the Fabien Castanier’s exhibit was the special titled CHECK OUT, executed in partnership with LaRete Art Projects. It was a presentation of Mark Jenkins installation, a provocative, site specific work named High Noon.
Futura, Dondi White & Remmellzee
Pieces by Futura, Dondi White and Rammellzee were exhibited, as they make the trio of most influential graffiti artists in the history of the movement. Lucky visitors could view their fantastic signature pieces, the ultimate creations of their artistic expressions that later became the incentive for the graffiti art crusaders in that and the following decades.
Futura is one of the pioneers of the graffiti art, as he started acting in the 70’s with some of the biggest names of the early movement. His most noted street art activity was during the 80’s, when he concentrated more on the abstract forms of art, than on the generally popular lettering, thus bringing the abstraction into the world of graffiti. Today he is an acclaimed designed and gallery artist.
Dondi White was the famous graffiti daredevil and the initiator of one of the most authoritative groups durign the 80’s, CIA – Crazy Inside Artists. Believing that it was important for the people to be able to read his work, he developed a stylized writing adding some characters to it, style which is still used by modern writers. He died prematurely in 1998.
Rammellzee was a NY based artist who is said to be the architect of the graffiti as we know it today. He followed the guidelines of gothic futurism, a style that left much impact on the coming generations. He passed in 2010.
