Dystopian Abstraction by Scott Anderson Tackling the Topic of Food at CES Gallery
CES Gallery is delighted to present Scott Anderson’s first solo exhibition with CES, titled Supper Club. Scott Anderson’s works featured in this exhibition are his process-based paintings that seek to establish the balance between the skepticism and romanticism, between history and the contemporary, between figuration and abstraction, and between the subconscious and the identifiable. Anderson’s husky yearning to paint merges with his self-aware actions and dreamlike narratives to create work that is color fervent, figuratively ambivalent, and politically hypnagogic. His dire abstractions are phantasmagoric and blur the lines between the fancy and the verisimilitude, thus inviting the viewers to confront their perception of what is real and what is not.
Anderson’s Creativity in the Abstract World
Scott Anderson’s creative process is an interesting one. He begins with an image that already exists, whether it is one of his photographs or something else. The picture then becomes a drawing, remade and re-illustrated many times. This pre-painting process becomes Anderson’s translation of the real into his own creation, in order to carefully steer his ideas through the image production. As Anderson paints, draws and scrapes into the surface, the continuous loss of control and of awareness of the original image follows and develops into an image that reminds one of a collage. During this creative journey, the stability of form and composition and the instability of unrecognizable subject matter combine and intertwine in the process of physical unearthing and demolition.
Scott Anderson’s Supper Club
For this series, Mr. Anderson raises the opportune topic of food, which has been unhesitatingly examined from Dutch still life painting and its envisage of wealth, to post-modernist depictions of instinctive desire. However, Anderson tackles the contemporary issues of social rituals, such as dinner parties, pop culture, and personal memories of a hungry teenager community of the suburbs. Embarking on a journey with these concrete meal narrative scenarios, Anderson captures the Dionysian encounter with painting creation, as the artistic process can be linked to eating in more ways than one. It is a slow digestion, a consumption, the chemical transformation, the prayer to the porcelain god, the pleasure. His paintings do not present the whole story, instead, they assemble an alternative, apocalyptic reality by using leftovers, the scraps, the bits and pieces and the refused parts. The result of this is a fusion of modernist painting patois that depends on political satire.
Scott Anderson Supper Club Exhibition at CES Gallery
Scott Anderson will exhibit his series Supper Club at CES Gallery from April 9th to May 14th, 2016. The gallery is located at 711 Mateo St, Los Angeles. This is the first Scott Anderson’s solo exhibition with the gallery and we are sure it will be equally interesting to the colorful abstract art aficionados as well as those who are not yet familiar with that movement. Moreover, Anderson is an artist whose works have been exhibited in MCA Chicago, the Parrish Art Museum, The Warhol Museum, and the Cranbrook Art Museum, and his pieces are a part of the permanent collection of the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art. His work has been featured in a number of publications, including The Washington Post and The Los Angeles Times, among others. He currently resides in La Cienega in New Mexico where he works as an Assistant Professor of Painting and Drawing at the University of New Mexico College of Fine Arts.
