April 23, 2015

A pretty strong Sotheby’s auction of Contemporary Art has taken place on Tuesday, April 21, in Doha, the capital of Qatar. The total of 11 artists achieved record prices, with Christopher Wool’s work Untitled leading the way with a seven-figure price. Anish Kapoor, El Anatsui and Rudolf Stingel also recorded high numbers, and almost 77 percent of total 56 lots were sold (76.8 percent, 43 out of 56 lots). Sixteen of them were sold over high estimate (28.6 percent of total lots and 37.2 percent of sold lots), 20 were sold in range of estimated values (46.5 percent of sold lots), and only 7 lots were sold under low estimate (16.3 percent of sold lots). The total score of the auction was $6.11 million, which was $1.25 million lower than the sum of high estimates for sold lots, but $1 million higher than the sum of low estimates. This result was even pretty close to the sum of low estimates for all lots – sold and unsold ones ($6.17 million).

The Individual Results at Sotheby's: Contemporary Art / DOHA

So, who was the star of Contemporary Art auction at Sotheby’s in Doha? Without a doubt, it was Christopher Wool and his Untitled work, which was sold for $1.1 million, and it had the highest estimated value as well – from $1,000,000 to $1,500,000. Anish Kapoor’s Untitled was sold for $850,000, or for $50,000 more than its low estimate, while El Anatsui’s Introvert was sold for $750,000, and was one of the rare artworks that were sold under low estimate ($800,000 – $1,200,000). Rudolf Stingel’s Untitled changed hands for $650,000, and this was the last lot that went over half a million, as the next one, Monir Farmanfarmaian’s A New Spring  was sold for $220,000 (it was estimated at $150,000 – $200,000). And now we come to the other winner of this auction, as Abdullah Qandeel’s work The Race was estimated at $20,000 – $30,000, and was sold for $220,000, or with staggering +633.3 percent difference between hammer price and high estimate. Ali Banisadr’s The Shrine also went over its high estimate, as it was sold for $190,000 (estimated at $100,000 – $150,000), as well as Ayman Baalbaki’s Al-Mulatham I (sold for $150,000, estimated at $80,000 – $120,000). Nejib Belkhodja’s Medina Entre Deux Orages (Medina Between Two Storms) went for low estimate at $150,000, while Kour Pour’s Love Child was sold for $130,000, or for $40,000 more than its high estimate. Farhad Moshiri’s I Got Sunshine changed hands for its low estimate at $120,000, Ramses Younan’s Untitled was sold for $110,000, while Abdulnasser Gharem’s Men At Work (Time Magazine Person Of The Year 2003: The American Soldier) and Wim Delvoye’s Dump Truck (Scale Model 1:6) went for $100,000 each, and these two were the last two lots that achieved price of $100,000+.

Highs and Lows of Sotheby's: Contemporary Art / DOHA

Aside from “explosion” of Abdullah Qandeel’s The Race that we mentioned, Inji Aflatoun’s L’Or Blanc (White Gold) had +83.3 percent difference between hammer price ($55,000) and its high estimate ($30,000). The mentioned Kour Pour’s work Love Child had +44.4 percent, as well as Hatem El-Mekki’s Gendarme Français Arretant Un Patriote Tunisien (French Officer Arresting A Tunisian Patriot) (this one was sold for $65,000), while Abdulnasser Gharem’s Men At Work (Time Magazine Person Of The Year 2003: The American Soldier) had +42.9 difference. When we talk about and artworks that didn’t do well, Rachid Koraïchi’s Nedjma (The Four Seasons) (estimated at $250,000 – $350,000), Chant Avedissian’s Icons Of The Nile ($180,000 – $250,000) and Charles Hossein Zenderoudi’s Reçu…Cinq Sur Cinq (Loud And Clear) ($150,000 – $200,000) were the lots with highest estimated price that weren’t sold. Not many lots were sold for under low estimated price, and these three lots had the highest negative difference between their respective hammer prices and low estimates: Mohamed Ben Allal’s Aux Portes De La Medina (The Doors Of The Medina), that was estimated at $15,000 – $20,000, but was sold for $13,000 (-13.3 percent difference between hammer price and low estimate), Chaouki Choukini’s La Tragedie Arabe (-16.7 percent) and Assadour’s Figures In A Landscape (-20 percent).
