Street artist EGS, one of Helsinki’s graffiti pioneers and the forerunner of the Finish street art scene will revisit a revolutionary route from Lake Geneva to the Finland Station this October in Soest, Germany. The exhibition hosted by Art Is Just a Four Letter Word will feature remarkable works presented by EGS, inspired, as always, by his passion for traveling and exploration of the specific graffiti tradition. Works showcased in Soest are a unique mixture of political history and geography incorporated into the signature black and white typography of the artist. The artworks deal with the questions of cultural identity and its formation in relation to political and social issues.

EGS – Graffiti Anthropologist

Born in 1974 in Helsinki, EGS was one of the most prominent graffiti writers to emerge from the Helsinki street art scene in the eighties and to quickly gain recognition internationally. During his more than two-decade long career of an artist and a passionate traveler, he has left his signature all over the globe. Throughout the years and frequent collaborations with numerous international artists, EGS has developed a unique style which incorporates various local graffiti motifs. The focus on the graffiti folklore and graffiti culture phenomenon has made his oeuvre anthropological and documentary, as every little detail of his works recollects memories of previously seen imagery reimagined by the artist. The work of EGS was featured in many publications that deal with the documentation of graffiti practices, the most recent being EGS AEON NUG street art book which was issued earlier this month during a group exhibition of these three artists in Barcelona.

Revolutionary Road from Lake Geneva to the Finland Station

Quite interesting title of the show is actually a reference to the lyrics line of the famous Pet Shop Boys song West End Girls written in the eighties. Although the song doesn’t specifically deal with the subject of social revolution the lyrics are inspired by the historical work on socialism entitled To the Finland Station: A Study in the Writing and Acting of History, written by the American scholar Edmund Wilson, and it is suggested that Neil Tennant read the book during his history studies. The title of the book and the lyrics invoke the secret train trip to Russia Vladimir Lenin took with the help of the Germans during the World War I. The title seems clever and well-chosen given the fact that EGS often incorporates his interest in cultural history and geography into his graffiti and painting practice.
