Tacita Dean's Art Takes Over Three Major London Galleries for an Unprecedented Collaboration!
In a unique collaboration never seen before in the UK, three major London galleries will open three distinct exhibitions, each of which will focus on a specific genre of Tacita Dean‘s oeuvre. The three galleries in question are the National Portrait Gallery, the Royal Academy of Arts and the National Gallery.
These upcoming exhibitions will explore genres traditionally associated with painting, putting Dean’s landscapes, portraits and still life works under a microscope. Explorations of landscape will take place at the Royal Academy of Arts, portraiture will be investigated at the National Portrait Gallery, while still-life art by Tacita Dean will be the focus of the National Gallery’s show.
Portraits at the National Portrait Gallery
Tacita Dean: PORTRAIT at the National Portrait Gallery will shed light on the artist’s portraiture, primarily investigating Dean’s favorite medium of 16mm film. Interestingly, this show will be the first in the gallery’s history to be devoted to this medium!
The exhibition will reveal the artist’s longstanding and personal interest in portraiture as a genre. Works previously unseen in the UK will be on display, like the major six-screen installation with Merce Cunningham. Dean is also making two new films specifically for presentation in the forthcoming exhibition.
Landscapes at the Royal Academy of Arts
Tacita Dean: LANDSCAPE at the Royal Academy of Arts will be the first time the new Gabrielle Jungels-Winkler Galleries at the RA will be put to use. The exhibition will explore landscape in its broadest sense, venturing into everything between botany and cosmography.
Keeping the persistent place of landscape tradition in mind, Dean created works for the RA’s new spaces, with the brand new large-scale photogravure, Forty Days, really standing out. Particularly interested in picturesque and the sublime, her earlier works associated to the genre will also be displayed.
Still Life Art at the National Gallery
Tacita Dean: STILL LIFE at the National Gallery shall present an innovative exploration of the genre through Dean’s works, establishing her as one of the genre’s leading contemporary practitioners.
The show will feature a diverse selection of works, all displayed with the goal of providing a forum for repositioning concepts of still life as well as examining its often overlooked legacy within the history of art.
Tacita Dean Art Exhibitions at Three London Galleries
Tacita Dean, the star of the upcoming shows, did not hide her excitement about the forthcoming events and their ambitious goals:
It has been a huge pleasure developing the structure of these exhibitions with everyone involved and daring to gently nudge pre-existing orthodoxies about what constitutes a landscape, portrait and still life.
All three of these exhibitions will be exploring traditional painterly genres through the contemporary prism of Tacita Dean’s wide-ranging artistic practice. The shows at National Portrait Gallery and National Gallery will be on display between the 15th of March and the 28th of May 2018, and the Royal Academy of Arts show will be open between the 19th of May and the 12th of August 2018.
