TEFAF Maastricht 2015
TEFAF (The European Fine Art Fair) that will be held in Maastricht (Netherlands) next month will gather 275 of the most prominent galleries from 20 countries around the globe. TEFAF is considered as one of the biggest art fairs in the world, with some of the greatest art works that are available on the market. This art fair will include works of art from antique as well as the old masters paintings. The visitors of The European Fine Art Fair will also be able to see classical, modern and contemporary art, photographs, 20th century design, jewelry and works on paper – the 5,500 years of art history.

The Highlights of TEFAF Maastricht 2015
The novelty of this year’s TEFAF Maastricht is that it will be the host of one guest-curated contemporary exhibition – this year that curators will be Sydney Picasso and Hidde van Seggelen, that will curate the exhibition of post-modern and contemporary sculpture that is called Night Fishing, with works of well known artists Georg Baselitz and Tony Cragg, to name a couple. Who wants to see the work of the old masters, should go to the Weiss Gallery where it would be the collection of Frans Pourbus the Younger, nine works of this artist that lived in the second half of 16th and the beginning of the 17th century. Then, there will be The Madonna and Child with a Goldfinch of Moretti gallery, the painting that was at first thought that it was Sandro Botticelli’s and that was created in the second half of 15th century (in 1480, to be precise), but, in the 1930’s the experts changed their mind, and said this painting was made in the 16th century, by someone in Botticelli’s workshop. Who is more fond of the art of the 20th century, surely should check out the paintings of two London based galleries – Dickinson and Thomas Gibson Fine Art. The first brings to the TEFAF Kees van Dongen’s Lailla (from 1908), while the latter London’s gallery brings Laurette au châle vert by Henri Matisse.
More of the 20th Century
Be sure also to take a look at Gallery Delaive’s paintings of Karel Appel (Out of the Nature, oil on canvas from 1996), as well as and Sam Francis‘ Join the Chaos from 1990. Gallery Hopkins will present itself with Max Ernst’s painting Figure Zoomorphe (oil on canvas, from 1928) and Pablo Picasso’s Couple (painted and glazed ceramics, dated 1963). Ludorff Gallery brings the whole range of the 20th century artworks, including Gerhard Richter’s oil on canvas from 1993 called Grün – Blau – Rot 789-38, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff’s An der Küste von Jershöft – Haus am Meer from 1921, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner’s Sitzende Frau mit einem Hut in einem Restaurant from 1912, Serge Poliakoff’s oil on canvas dated 1964 and called Gris et rouge, and Max Ernst’s De but en blanc, oil on wood from 1959. Thomas Gibson Fine Art gallery will also showcase Picasso’s Deux Nus Couchés from 1972, and Leslie Smith Gallery will present Banksy’s Keep it Real, Monkey from 2003.

The Antiquities, Works on Paper and Dali
The oldest portrait at The European Fine Art Fair in Maastricht this year is coming from the ancient Egypt. Charles Ede, the gallery from London, brings to TEFAF portrait of a girl, dated back in second century AD, that was excavated in the late 19th century. This portrait offers the characteristics of the Roman period in Egypt, and it shows the combination of ancient Greek portrait and tradition of Egyptian mummification techniques. Then, also from Egypt comes the wood panel from the sarcophagus of Hathorhotep. This painted panel is dated almost two millenniums before Christ (1890-1880 BC), and it will be brought Rupert Wace gallery, also from London. As for the TEFAF Paper section, there will be 12 volumes of Le Grand atlas from 1663, that was the largest atlas back then, and was published by Johannes Blaeu. It will be displayed on the stand of London-based Crouch Rare Books. Also, the TEFAF offers the rarest furniture from all periods. We recommend the Mae West Lips sofa that was designed by Salvador Dali, and that was inspired by the Hollywood actress Mae West.
