Heavy Metal – Opening
There wasn’t even enough space for everyone who wanted to come to the opening of the Heavy Metal exhibition. First of all, it’s a celebration of the 30th anniversary of the artist’s extraordinary practice (just to mention that Baumgartel is not only famous street art pioneer; he is also a painter, performance and installation artist, while his iconic banana stencil pieces can be found at the entrances of about 4000 locations of art in Germany and abroad). The opening speeches celebrated the oeuvre of Banana Sprayer, honoring his personality and art. The speech also honored another well-known person – Konrad Adenauer, who is the chairman of the city’s Memorial Foundation, and the grandson of the former German Chancellor of the same name. The visitors had (and still have) the opportunity to see some of the most remarkable Baumgartel’s works – his famous sprayed road and urban signs, artistically decorated metal doors, patinated aluminum roll slices and other metal objects, usually depicting the famous faces of politics and music, and, of course, his famous banana.

Thomas Baumgartel is not only popular for his art. It’s also about political and social messages he sends through his art practice. He compares the art market to the dance of death, places Durer’s Adam and Eve in a state that refers to the current criticism of satire, and he relates Konrad Adenauer and Kennedy to his iconic banana and mars them as its spiritual fathers. Baumgartel is also known for Banana Pointillism – a painting style using small stencils to spray banana onto canvass in yellow and black. The painting series The Old Master and the Banana and No More War – Only Bananas, or motifs such as Clinton and Kohl, Cologne Cathedral and World Trade Center are created. Actually, Cologne Cathedral often appears in artist’s compositions.
