Cristina Guerra Contemporary Art was officially inaugurated in March of 2001. Run by Ana Cristina Guerra, the gallery predominantly focuses the conceptual work of 20 contemporary artists.

Besides participating in high-profile art fairs such as Art Basel, Art Basel Miami Beach, ARCO (Madrid), FIAC and Shanghai, in 2004, Cristina Guerra Contemporary Art launched a new campaign of four yearly exhibitions, organized by foreign guest curators. The gallery has conceived these exhibitions as platforms of exchange, discussion and expansion.

The first exhibition in this series, entitled Around the Corner, opened in September of 2004. London-based, Spanish-born curator, Carolina Grau, curated this first show with four guest artists who had never worked with the gallery, or in Lisbon, before. A full-colour, soft-cover catalogue was launched at Art Basel’s professional day in June of 2005. The second show in this series, Romance (a novel) was curated by Brazilian writer and art critic, Adriano Pedrosa. In 2006, Marc-Olivier Wahler director of the Palais de Tokyo curated the penultimate show and Jens Hoffmann, Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts director, has agreed to curate the last Exhibit – FOR SALE – opened on September 20th of 2007. All four exhibits comprise catalogues with texts by the curators and/or participating artists and images of the works on display.

The gallery follows a tight schedule of eight to nine exhibitions per year, which are planned over a year in advance. Besides this active program, during several short interludes, the gallery hosts book launches and performances/happenings.

The gallery also supports many of its artists’ publications and promotes artists’ exhibitions in local and foreign museums and institutions by extensively communicating these events to its audience of visitors and the local and international press.
