Cai Guo-Qiang – Wolves Of The Dark Night Drawing Experiment For Deutsche Guggenheim, 2005 (Lot 34). Estimated at $128,968 – $193,452. Cai Guo-Qiang is one of the most influential artists internationally in the contemporary Chinese art world. Cai has transported the pyrotechnics of Chinese traditions to the rest of the world through the medium of art. Explosives constitute one of Cai Guo-Qiang’s iconic creative media. Before he completes a large-format installation work, he often creates a gunpowder drawing specific to the piece. The unusual medium of gunpowder, whose roots can be traced to ancient China and Chinese culture, portrays the motion of the running wolf, whose image is barely perceivable. The spirited vitality of this drawing closely resembles that of Chinese ink paintings.

They both entered private collections in Paris on the same day in the early 1960s and have never moved since. They have never been reproduced or exhibited before. / Right: Zao Wou-Ki – 1.5.60, 1960 (Lot 9). Estimated at $1,296,780 – $1,945,170. 1960 was a year of intense artistic activity for Zao Wou-Ki who painted nearly forty paintings. He usually painted slowly and sometimes reworked his canvases over several months, even several years. At the beginning of the 1960s however, he painted many more pictures than in previous years. This sudden frenzy of creation was the result of several changes in his life and his work that provoked a complete renewal and the rise of a period of plenitude.
