Upcoming Auctions: June 29 - July 5
Hello, collectors and auctions admirers! We’ve had some hickups with the site, but we’re back on tracks just in time for another set of upcoming auctions. Actually, three auctions will be already over at the time of your reading of this post, as Photographs, Icons & Style sale took place on 30 June in Christie’s Paris, while the Post-War and Contemporary Art Evening Auction at Christie’s London and Out of the Box: Contemporary Art Since 1990 at Dreweatts & Bloomsbury Auctions are on its way live, as this upcoming auctions post is being written (June 30 in the evening, CET). Of course, you will be able to read the results of these auctions soon on WideWalls.
However, there are five more auctions left this week. First, three auctions that we’ll cover will be held on July 1: Post War and Contemporary Art at Bonhams London, Post War and Contemporary Day Auction at Christie’s London and Contemporary Art Evening Auction at Sotheby’s London. On the next day, July 2, two more auctions are ahead, Contemporary Art Day Auction at Sotheby’s London and Editions and Works on Paper at Dreweatts & Bloomsbury Auctions, also in London.
Naturally, evening sales at Christie’s and Sotheby’s will draw the biggest attention, with many masterpieces of Contemporary art put up for sale. These two auctions will take up the bulk of estimated $405,003,032 – $574,917,431 for 1,170 lots that will be put on sale at all eight auctions.

Photographies, Icons & Style at Christie's Paris
Sixty three lots were offered for sale at the second edition of the Photographs – Icons & Style sale at Christie’s Paris, with works by Irving Penn, Helmut Newton, Robert Mapplethorpe, and Nick Brandt, among others, with Helmut Newton’s Big Nude II as the highest priced lot of the auction – this is a work from Newton’s first and most important set of the dramatic life-size standing nude figure studies, that he initiated in 1980. The total value of this sale is estimated at $1,498,877 – $2,173,875, with the average price of $29,149 per lot.

An interesting auction was held on June 30 at Dreweatts & Bloomsbury auction house in London, where Out of the Box: Contemporary Art Since 1990 took place. Works by artists like Nigel Cooke, Oscar Murillo, Rodney Graham, Banksy, Julie Mehretu, Christian Rosa, Eva Rothschild and Damien Hirst were auctioned in London on June 30, and total of 101 lots were estimated at $2,063,169 – $2,878,477 (without buyer’s premium.

Post War and Contemporary Evening Auction at Christie’s London is one of the two most important auctions that are scheduled for this week. With a several top-end masterpieces, this auction had its value estimated at $129,607,905 – $181,514,098, with the average lot price over $2 million. Among others, there were works by Francis Bacon, Yves Klein, Sigmar Polke, Andy Warhol, Christopher Wool, with Francis Bacon’s Study For Head Of Isabel Rawsthorne And George Dyer being the highest priced lot of the auction.

Another 211 lots will be put on sale – works by Sean Scully, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Glenn Brown, Robert Longo, Takashi Murakami, Peter Doig, George Condo and Sigmar Polke, amongst the others. The estimated average lot value is set at $115,514.

On July 1, at Bonhams London (New Bond Street) Post War and Contemporary Art auction should start at 4 PM. Just 43 lots will be put on sale, and works by Günther Uecker, Alberto Burri, Lucio Fontana, Anish Kapoor, Banksy and Andy Warhol will be the most prominent ones of the auction. The whole auction value is estimated at $3,669,992 – $5,318,258, with the average estimated lot value just over $100,000.

Contemporary Art Evening Auction at Sotheby’s London will be the most important auction this week, as 59 lots are estimated at $225,683,212 – $322,451,861, or $4,65 million per lot. This auction will be highlighted with three works by Francis Bacon – a rare work from his iconic Pope series and two re-discovered self-portraits. Other than this, Evening auction will feature works by Jean-Michel Basquiat, Lucio Fontana, Peter Doig, Yves Klein, David Hockney and Lucian Freud.

On Thursday, July 2, Contemporary Art Day Auction is scheduled at Sotheby’s London, with almost 300 post-war and contemporary artworks, for an average price of $84,810 per lot. The auction is separated into two sessions – the first one (lots 101-237) will start at 10 AM, and the second one at 2 PM (lots 301 – 455). Works by Yves Klein, Günther Uecker, Sigmar Polke and Tom Wesselmann should attract the biggest attention. The estimated value of the whole auction is between $20,590,717 and $29,107,808.
