What is Wynwood?

November 26, 2014
Sanja Lazic was born in 1990 in Belgrade, Serbia. Her interest in art comes from a very early age and although she didn’t have the talent to pursue it professionally, she enjoys every day working and writing about it. Her favorite urban artists are Interesni Kazki, Saner and Phlegm.

The beginning of fall is art fair time in the art world. One of the biggest and most important ones is opening in the first week of December: Art Basel Miami. More than 200 leading galleries from North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia, and Africa will show historical works from more than 4,000 masters of Modern and contemporary art as well as newly created pieces by emerging stars. Paintings, sculptures, installations and drawings will be presented at this year’s art fair. Art Basel Miami is just one of the many cities across the globe where visitors will get the chance to enjoy the world’s-best art. Beside the art fair, amazing beaches and wonderful weather, Miami also offers an entire district dedicated to art. Over the past few years Wynwood Arts District has become famous for its beautiful murals adorning almost every wall. During Art Basel Miami 2014 many of the district’s facades are being refreshed with new works.

Miami’s Art District

Art Miami, being one of the leading international contemporary and modern art fairs in the world, attracts more than 65,000 motivated collectors, curators, museum workers and art lovers from around the globe to the Midtown Miami complex in the renowned Wynwood Arts District. This being the 24th year since its first edition, the quality of the exhibitors and artists doesn’t weaken, on the contrary, it’s getting better. The art fair remains committed to showcasing some of the most important artworks of the 20th and 21st centuries in collaboration with a selection of the world’s most respected galleries like Gagosian, Gallerie Perrotin, Hirschl & Adler etc. The fair is the opportunity to start building or continue expanding your own art collection, since the prices of exhibited artworks range from very affordable ones, to museum-caliber masterpieces.

Getting More Attention

The Wynwood Arts District is one of the most important art dedicated places in the world. It is home to over 70 art galleries, retail Stores, antique shops, eclectic bars, and one of the largest open-air street-art installations in the world. The creators of the projects took over what used to be the warehouse and manufacturing district of Greater Miami, and started refurbishing abandoned locations like neglected warehouses, closed factories and many unused or deserted spaces. They turned the area into numerous art complexes, galleries, spaces used for performing arts, as well as coffee shops, restaurants and other creative spaces now used for the Art Basel Miami. This way Miami is transformed into a wonderful and art friendly environment, ready to welcome everyone. With the introduction of the Second Saturday Art Walk in the District and the arrival of the Art Basel fair in 2002, Wynwood became a place that now represents something more than its original setting. It’s getting more and more attention in the media, and especially among the youngsters, by creating a fantastic platform for business and growth.
