Xu Bing at SCAD

February 12, 2015

An extraordinary event takes place in Savannah and Atlanta this month, an event that will bring together amazing artists coming from different fields. The Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) organizes the sixth edition of deFINE ART, the university’s annual contemporary art showcase. This grandiose festival of contemporary art includes exhibitions, lectures and public events. For art lovers, the most interesting events will take place at the SCAD Museum of Art in Savannah. The deFINE ART 2015’s honoree and keynote speaker is famous Chinese contemporary artist Xu Bing, whose works will be exhibited at the museum. However, the works by many other globally recognized artists will also be exhibited during this year’s deFINE ART.

This year’s deFINE ART will include the presentation of the work of some well-known artists. The designs by one of the most notable fashion designers Oscar de la Renta will be on view at the Museum. This exhibition of de la Renta’s works, curated by André Leon Talley, will include the selection of looks worn by celebrity clients and some of de la Renta’s longtime supporters. But the list of artists whose work will be presented at the deFINE ART 2015 is spectacular indeed. The works by Michal Lin, Serge Alain Nitegeka, Ryoji Ikeda, Caomin Xie and Nari Ward will be on show as well. The showcase also includes a group exhibition named Linear Abstraction, featuring site-specific works from Rana Begum, Marco Breuer, John Houck, Michelle Grabner, Matt Mignanelli and Rafael Vega, among others. The paintings and photographs by SCAD students will also be put on view. In Atlanta, SCAD will present the exhibitions by Jasper Just and SCAD alumna Naimar Ramirez.

Xu Bing: Things Are Not What They First Appear

The central exhibition of this contemporary art showcase is the show of works by this year’s honoree, the famous Chinese artist Xu Bing. Probably the best known artist from China at this moment, Bing is famous for his big installation pieces and printmaking skills. For the purposes of this exhibition, the major works from the series Background Stories will be shown. The works from this series highlight the artist’s reinterpretation of significant historical images from Chinese tradition and history, specifically the festival tradition of mounting climbing. As in many of his works, Xu Bing uses unusual material (plastic bags, refuse and other found materials). The works from the Tobacco Project series will be showed as well. The works from this series are product of the artist’s interest in tobacco business and cultural implications of the use of tobacco. Tobacco is both the subject and the medium. Finally, Xu Bing will present its animated film The Character of Characters, a complex video work that illustrates the history of Chinese characters, but it also engages with ongoing Chinese social issues.
